German scholar Karl Haushofer referred to Indo-Pacific in the 1920s.1 Subsequently, Kalidas Nag also referred to the Indo-Pacific while explaining about India’s cultural presence (Nag, 1941). More recently, the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe2 in his speech in the Indian parliament alluded to the Indo-Pacific. While the earlier conceptualisations were based on notions of shared culture, the articulations of Indo-Pacific construct in the 21st Century were also driven by security considerations.
