Given India’s ongoing border standoff with China, Russia may be concerned about New Delhi firmly becoming a part of the US-led framework to counter Beijing. On the other hand, there is a perception in Delhi that Russia can be weaned away from Chinese-oriented frameworks through collaboration with other countries. For instance, New Delhi has been favorably inclined toward Moscow’s participation in an expanded Group of Ten, after it was articulated by US President Donald Trump earlier this year. Moreover, India’s recent attempts to explore a Russia-India-Japan trilateral will push Moscow toward plurilateral frameworks sans Beijing.
