India, Pakistan and the limits of cultural sanctions

Is a complete ban on Pakistan artists performing in India a prudent strategy? Reflecting on the issue, noted actor and parliamentarian, Paresh Rawal recently stated that “there should be no ban on anyone.” Earlier, the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, also expressed a similar opinion that he would welcome artists from Pakistan to perform in India. However, the abduction and killing of the Indian soldiers, violence along the Line-of-Control and the constant unrest in the Kashmir valley has ensured that the probability of rethink on India’s cultural engagement of Pakistan looks bleak at the moment.
